As one of the best selling rock bands ever with album sales topping 40 million, STP are back with a new self titled Album that was released this week. Gutar player Dean DeLeo discussed the new album with musicradar.com,
Dean DeLeo talked about getting back into the studio with Stone Temple Pilots, a band he drove with ferocious guitars for 14 years. The band famously imploded in 2003, with Weiland joining former Guns N’ Roses members Slash, Duff McKagen and Matt Sorum in Velvet Revolver and Dean and his brother Robert forming Army of Anyone with Richard Patrick from Filter and drummer Ray Luzier. With Weiland’s recent departure from Velvet Revolver, the door was open for a reunion. After a massive North American tour, the band hunkered down in the studio and emerged with the self-titled Stone Temple Pilots, one of their best received albums to date.
“I always knew this day would come,” said DeLeo. “I've heard Scott [Weiland] talk about us making more music as 'unfinished business,' and you know, c'est la vie. Here we are. I hope to make five more great records with this band.”
“A lot of people called our situation a ‘break-up,’ but we — and I'm talking about the band — refer to it as a much-needed respite. Look, if we didn't go our separate ways right then and kind of tuck this in bed for a while, we never would've gotten back together. We were shoulder-to-shoulder for 14 years. We spent most of our adult lives in tight surroundings and quarters.”
Always having one of the most crushing guitar sounds in rock, DeLeo leaned heavily on a modified Les Paul:
“Yeah, the black Les Paul has some interesting wiring to it. I hope that Gibson will one day re-create this guitar. I'm kind of talking to them about putting this guitar on the market. It really is very special. You know, when you plug in a wah-wah pedal and you find that really sweet spot to solo with? Well, when you pop the tone knob on this, it allows you to get that wah thing.”
With such a storied, talented, and successful band backed up with ferocious vocals from Scott Weiland, Thunderous guitar and bass by Brothers Dean and Robert DeLeo And Eric Kretz on drums, Stone Temple Pilots promises to turn some heads and sales numbers, this album may not live up to the STP of the nineties it does convey what this band is best at, rock and roll.
