STUTTGART, Germany — The last Hummer may have come off the line earlier this week in Shreveport, Louisiana, but outdoors adventurers mourning the death of the big GM SUV can take heart. Mercedes-Benz on Wednesday rolled out the $303,745 Unimog U 4000 expedition camper, which makes the old Hummers look like they were designed for Cub Scouts.
Mercedes-Benz describes the behemoth Unimog camper as "the consummate solution for even the most ardent adventurer."
Power comes from a 218-horsepower 4.2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine. "Should it — in the very unlikely event — get stuck, the Unimog can use its hydraulic 7-ton front winch to pull itself out of the quagmire with its 'own hair' a la Baron Munchausen," said Mercedes-Benz in a statement.
The latest version of the Unimog appears to be a survivalist's dream. It is able to haul its own water supply via a 79-gallon fresh water tank and also has a 52-gallon waste-holding tank. The rear features a double bed, a kitchen with two-burner gas stove, refrigerator and sink and a television and a satellite dish.
