Not your moms station wagon

In unfashion of all things environmental and reasonable, Cadillac has just released the 2011 CTS-V wagon. A balls out rendition of there regular CTS Wagon packing a ridiculous 556 hp and 551lb/ft of torque, probably the most obscure and over the top car an American car company has ever produced. Many European manufactures do have super hot wagons like the RS6 Audi, The E63 Mercedes AMG and the M5 BMW, this Cadillac is a new gun for these established cars to compete with. A far cry from a typical American Lead Sled wagon like a Chevy Caprice or Ford Ltd wagon, The CTS is a sports machine with numbers and technology to back it up, it will run 0-100km/h in four seconds flat(somewhat ferrariesque), brake from 100km/h to 0 in 109 feet and run .90 g's of cornering force in a skidpad. With 6 piston caliper Brembo brakes, A supercharged 6.2 litre ls9 chevrolet motor and super sticky Michelin tires this thing is a beast all the while supplying you with tons of room for your groceries, a bookshelf, a guitar amp, your golf clubs and stuff for a weekend getaway, right after you run hot laps at laguna seca.

Awesomely Painfully Canadian

The 98th Grey Cup went down yesterday in Edmonton with the Montreal Alouettes and Anthony Calvillo, taking the cup over the Saskatchewan Rough Riders in the championship game. It was a sold out affair in chilly Edmonton, which saw approximately 400000 fans descending on the town to take part in revellry and other such affairs. It was a very nationalistic event where the army was involved, droves of fans from all over came and canadian rock legends BTO performed. The Grey Cup definetly lacks the corporate slick that the Super Bowl has with its big buisness intrests, but our hokey football league puts on a good show alltogether, highlighting the best that Canada has to offer for football done totally our style.

California Marijuana Vote

When Californians go to the polls tonight to vote on their historic marijuana bill, It could have wide spread effects in BC. If the law is passed in California, adults 21 and over will be allowed to possess up to one ounce of weed and would be able to grow weed in a space up to 25 square feet in a private residence legally. This potentially could have a massive effect on BC's largest industry which does happen to be marijuana cultivation, which is still illegal in Canada. An industry estimated at 7 billion dollars a year, bigger than forestry, energy, mining, fisheries or tourism.

California is a destination for BC Bud due to high demand, the high price for weed, california's weed culture and California's nearly 40 million people. These factors attract organized crime in BC to smuggle and sell to California, due to high margins and the high demand, it is a very good market for BC to sell to. If the bill passes this would virtually eliminate california's demand for weed sending BC growers SOL and most likely the price down. Now technically most people who are growing weed in BC as their first source of income are probably not paying tax on that but in spinoffs from their income they are paying tax, like on cars and trucks, fuel, property tax, realtors, houses, growing equipment, lawyers, which in turn does benefit other parts of BCs economy. Many people are not legally employed in the industry but they are "employed" in one way or another and do spend money in BCs economy. So this mainstream underground industry in BC may see some layoffs in some terms, which will give a hit to BC's economy without a doubt.

I don't disagree with california's motives for doing this it would send a shockwave effect to organized crime and probably put some criminals out of business, i think weed in moderation is not a dangerous drug but it is a potent one. Also interesting is if this bill is passed it will be in direct violation of United States federal drug laws so i guess well see what comes of this and what the governator has to say.

Lots of Fish

The Recent Fraser River Sockeye Run Saw, Give or take a Few Million, 25 million fish return to spawn up the Fraser and its tribuaries, This is a record smashing year and the largest run of sockeye in the Fraser in 97 years, meaning huge numbers of Fraser River Sockeye salmon are back and with a vengence. No One predicted this run but it ended up happening, kindof funny that a government agency (Department Of Fisheries and Oceans) that has almost unlimited resources has No Idea how to measure or predict this stuff, kinda tells you how little they really know about the environment, maybe. This comes after a dismal return in 2009 when only 1.4 million fish returned and commercial fishing was closed completely except for native food fisheries...The healthy Natural return this year allowed for certain quotas of fish to be caught and sold, bringing economic benefit to BC, as well as a massive amount of fish that will return to spawn bringing hopefully a building block of more fish to be born and return to spawn down the line. Salmon have and amazing capacity to regenerate there numbers through Healthy runs and Healthy oceans and this kindof shows that i guess. Time will tell if this is a one time thing or if the numbers are returning year after year after decades of over fishing in the biggest salmon river in the world right in Vancouver's backyard.

British Petroleum

Unless you’ve fallen into a very, very deep hole, you have probably heard about the worst ecological disaster in decades, That is an oil well Leak in the Gulf Of Mexico south of poor Louisiana, Whose been hit with some of the worst ecological, and natural disasters in the past few years.

On April 20th A drilling rig owned by Transocean Ltd. which in turn is owned by British Petroleum exploded killing 11 people, and injuring 17 others and creating a massive oil leak 5000 feet below the surface of the ocean. The leak is now a logistical, and environmental nightmare, which will haunt many gulf coast States and other nations in the area for decades to come. When the Problem first occurred BP downplayed it as not that bad and had expectations that it would be fixed very quickly, they estimated that it was leaking about 1000 barrels of oil into the ocean a day, which was a gross in estimate, And really a flat out lie. BP Which is the fourth largest company in the world, with revenues of over 200 billion dollars a year, was far more concerned with its public image to investors rather then fixing the problem. Since the April 20th explosion the disaster has become a household name all over the world being covered by international media 24 hours a day.

As a few weeks have passed the magnitude of the situation has been brought forward to the United States and the world, Experts in the field from all over the world are now on site and trying to figure out the damage and how to fix the issue. On May 27th an Updated estimate of the leak was released which was 12000-19000 barrels of oil a day, however some estimates are up to 100000 barrels of oil a day which is 16 million litres PER DAY being leaked into the ocean, hopefully that estimate is wrong. The nature of oil being lighter than water is for it to float to the surface and spread out. 1 drip of oil will spread out 100 times on the surface of water. The oil slick created by this leak is now about 3800 square miles, (6000 square kilometres), but there are massive underwater plumes of oil that have yet to make it to the surface so the scope of the disaster is yet to be realized.

Then there is the environmental damage created from this incident, both short term and long term, Oil is a horribly toxic substance to living things, and will kill almost anything immersed in it, including, all creatures big and small from whales to plankton. The major problem with oil is that water and oil DO NOT MIX whatsoever due to there physical and chemical make up, so the oil will not breakdown and the whole area will have toxic contamination. The sheer volume of oil being leaked is disgusting and this will be the worst ecological disaster ever. All types of plants, animals and sea life in the affected area will see shocking loss of life and will probably never return to pre spill numbers.

This Disaster Really seems to outline the culture of giant companies like BP, and the worldwide obsession with fossil fuels, and many others in America and around the world. Obviously BP knew right from the get go this was going to be bad for them, yet there first move was not to get a huge cleanup effort going it was to assure there investors and stockholders everything was going to be fine. The three main companies involved in this are BP, Transocean Ltd. and Halliburton who manufactured much of the equipment used for these rigs. (Dick Cheney, The Ex Vice President of the United States Used to be President, CEO and chairman of the board of Halliburton and still has massive investment ties and powerful connections within the company). Unlike in other countries using similar rigs the United States Does not mandate the use of shut off valve at the bottom of the well which is much of the reason this situation is so complicated.

The United States is no doubt pissed about this disaster and President Obama Will use the full extent of the law to go after the people and companies responsible for the damage created. BP has being named responsible for the leak and will have to pay out of its own pocket to fix the situation, However, there is no monetary price you can put on the damage created, you are talking about damage to the earth. After a month long series of unfortunate events to try and rectify the situation in the Gulf, BP was able to install a cap on Thursday and has not stopped but slowed the leak. The political, environmental and economical fallout remain to be seen but it will not be good.

This disaster also outlines America's and the rest of the worlds insatiable need for oil and fossil fuels. Looking to the short term which is all that really matters to to most people and companies currently, Fossil fuels and there by products are no doubt the cheapest and most efficient way to power the world we live in in terms of trucks, trains, ships, electricity, transport and many of the staples we live by. If You look at the full scale and long term effects of using fossil fuels to power our world, from the risks of extracting, to transporting to burning these fuels. It is far worse then spending the extra money now to start using more environmentally friendly modes which long term will be way better, i guess that is the nature of consumeristic nations, get it cheap, who cares about the effects.

Stone Temple Pilots

As one of the best selling rock bands ever with album sales topping 40 million, STP are back with a new self titled Album that was released this week. Gutar player Dean DeLeo discussed the new album with musicradar.com,

Dean DeLeo talked about getting back into the studio with Stone Temple Pilots, a band he drove with ferocious guitars for 14 years. The band famously imploded in 2003, with Weiland joining former Guns N’ Roses members Slash, Duff McKagen and Matt Sorum in Velvet Revolver and Dean and his brother Robert forming Army of Anyone with Richard Patrick from Filter and drummer Ray Luzier. With Weiland’s recent departure from Velvet Revolver, the door was open for a reunion. After a massive North American tour, the band hunkered down in the studio and emerged with the self-titled Stone Temple Pilots, one of their best received albums to date.

“I always knew this day would come,” said DeLeo. “I've heard Scott [Weiland] talk about us making more music as 'unfinished business,' and you know, c'est la vie. Here we are. I hope to make five more great records with this band.”

“A lot of people called our situation a ‘break-up,’ but we — and I'm talking about the band — refer to it as a much-needed respite. Look, if we didn't go our separate ways right then and kind of tuck this in bed for a while, we never would've gotten back together. We were shoulder-to-shoulder for 14 years. We spent most of our adult lives in tight surroundings and quarters.”

Always having one of the most crushing guitar sounds in rock, DeLeo leaned heavily on a modified Les Paul:

“Yeah, the black Les Paul has some interesting wiring to it. I hope that Gibson will one day re-create this guitar. I'm kind of talking to them about putting this guitar on the market. It really is very special. You know, when you plug in a wah-wah pedal and you find that really sweet spot to solo with? Well, when you pop the tone knob on this, it allows you to get that wah thing.”

With such a storied, talented, and successful band backed up with ferocious vocals from Scott Weiland, Thunderous guitar and bass by Brothers Dean and Robert DeLeo And Eric Kretz on drums, Stone Temple Pilots promises to turn some heads and sales numbers, this album may not live up to the STP of the nineties it does convey what this band is best at, rock and roll.

this is a SICK Camper

Edmunds.com

STUTTGART, Germany — The last Hummer may have come off the line earlier this week in Shreveport, Louisiana, but outdoors adventurers mourning the death of the big GM SUV can take heart. Mercedes-Benz on Wednesday rolled out the $303,745 Unimog U 4000 expedition camper, which makes the old Hummers look like they were designed for Cub Scouts.

Mercedes-Benz describes the behemoth Unimog camper as "the consummate solution for even the most ardent adventurer."

Power comes from a 218-horsepower 4.2-liter four-cylinder diesel engine. "Should it — in the very unlikely event — get stuck, the Unimog can use its hydraulic 7-ton front winch to pull itself out of the quagmire with its 'own hair' a la Baron Munchausen," said Mercedes-Benz in a statement.

The latest version of the Unimog appears to be a survivalist's dream. It is able to haul its own water supply via a 79-gallon fresh water tank and also has a 52-gallon waste-holding tank. The rear features a double bed, a kitchen with two-burner gas stove, refrigerator and sink and a television and a satellite dish.

Truck Restoration

Me, The Old Man and the really old man(grandpa), are restoring his 1972 GMC 2500 longbox with 50000 original miles, a sought after model becasue in 1973 massive cost cutting measures at GM lowered quality of their entire truck division. Pretty much stripped everything down off the truck except the cab. Truck is going to get bodywork and new paint (two toned cherry red and white) fresh interior and fresh power hopefully coming from a big block gm performance parts engine matted to a three speed auto which is original. Was out at the farm sandblasting the frame, suspension components, axles, wheels and drivetrain in advance of it heading into paint and body. Rigged up a "mechanized lift" using a 1967 Massey Ferguson backhoe and some chain...it worked out. truck should be done mid summer and she'll look good!

Behind, look at the coil springs rather than leaf springs, That JUST came out on new model Dodge trucks

John Mayer

Went to John Mayer last night at GM Place,

Micheal Franti and his band spearhead opened quite favourably. The 6 foot 6 Franti and Spearhead took to the stage at 8 and delivered a very crowd pleasing and crowd involving performance that saw Franti all over the garage in the crowd even inviting all the kids in GM Place up on the stage for a song. They delivered their happy go lucky reggae hip-hop fusion music for about an hour, Franti was able to involve the audience and acted as a perfect warm up for Mayer.

Then 7 time Grammy winner John Mayer and his band took to the stage at about 9:25PM, kicking off an electric set that touched on all four albums including songs from Continuum and Battle Studies. His musicianship and live performance was second to none, producing tones and sounds out of his instrument of choice, a Fender Stratocaster, which defy all measures of music. During the show he involved the audience and had some funny comedic relief. He also played very worthy covers of Bill Withers, Ain't No Sunshine and Don't Stop Believing by Journey, Incorporating guitar work that make him arguably the best player of his generation using subtle but noticeable, pull offs slides and hammers on top of already complicated guitar. Another highlight was grammy winning drummer, Steve Jordan, who’s toured with Eric Clapton and the Stones, doing a 5 minute drum solo that included funkadelic beats and wicked quickness. Next, the band took a break and Mayer remained on stage performing a 6 song acoustic set showcasing his talent on beautiful Taylor acoustic guitars breaking into experimental solo acoustic work that sounded amazing. After the Acoustic set the band returned and finished up a set that included Gravity, and Why Georgia. Mayer and the band then finished to a roaring crowd of 12,000. The band returned for an encore including Who Says and fantastic version of Gravity using a few Hendrix tricks for kicks.

Overall the show was one of the best I’ve ever been too, Mayer seemed funny and easy going, not what you might expect from a hugely famous rock star that tabloids have an infatuation with, he played for over two hours straight and the crowd loved it. Would have liked to see him cover some Hendrix, which other than Stevie Ray Vaughan(RIP), Mayer is about the only one who can do it properly.

Death Penalty

Up Until July 1976 Canada, Had the use of the Death Penalty written into law, the last executions taking place in Canada were in 1962, In Toronto for separate convicted murderers. For all of Canada's capital punishment history, the method was by hanging, and for military offenders by firing squads. In Canada’s history 1481 people were sentenced to death, with 710 being executed. During the 1960s and 1970's opposition began to grow towards the law, over concerns of wrongful convictions and the penalty not really being a good deterrent for crimes of that magnitude. The Death Penalty was abolished by a narrow margin in a vote of confidence, 130-124 in 1976 and the death penalty still remained in military law but not practiced in Canada until 1998.

John Radclive was Canada’s first executioner starting in 1892, on the federal payroll as a hangman, he died in Toronto in 1911 from alcohol related disease. In the military the death penalty was administered by a firing squad, and if the victim was not killed on the first attempt they would receive an automatic life sentence and not be put to death. Many developed nations have abolished this form of punishment in recent history. Most Nations that still use the death penalty mostly utilize the lethal injection, sodium thiopental to make the condemned unconscious, pancuronium bromide to stop breathing, potassium chloride to stop the heart. Developed nations still employing this form of punishment include The United States, Japan, South Korea, China, Singapore, Taiwan, Cuba and Jamaica. In The United States over 60% of the populations still supports Capital punishment, However the United States has dropped its rate of Death penalty convictions dramatically in recent years

China tops out on the list with using the death penalty which has come under increasing worldwide public scrutiny in recent years, China has executed more than four times as many convicts as the rest of the world combined in the last year. China's Official numbers for execution are a State Secret, Amnesty International says the number could be as high as 8000 people per year compared with 60 in the U.S. There is also significant evidence the Chinese government is desecrating the bodies of victims and selling organs out of the bodies due to their high value, which is a sickening practice. In China 68 different crimes are punishable by death, with over half being non violent offences such as tax evasion, Theft, and piracy.
